House Edge Calculator
Calculate the theoretical casino advantage, expected return and expected loss from a game's house edge, wager amount and number of bets.

House Edge Does Not Predict Your Next Session
A house edge is a long-run mathematical expectation. Short-term results can vary dramatically because individual outcomes are affected by probability and variance.
In a short session, a player can:
- Win during a short session
- Lose more than the theoretical expectation
- Lose less than the theoretical expectation
- Experience unusually large wins or losses
The house edge does not determine the result of the next spin, hand or round.
What Does House Edge Mean?
House edge is the mathematical advantage built into a casino game over a sufficiently large number of wagers, based on the game's rules, probabilities, and payouts.
For example: If a game has a theoretical house edge of 2.70%, its theoretical RTP (Return to Player) is 97.30%. Over a sufficiently large amount of wagering, the mathematical expectation is that the house retains approximately 2.70% of the amount wagered.
Mathematical Formulas
House Edge vs RTP
House Edge
Theoretical percentage advantage of the casino.
RTP
Theoretical percentage returned to players over the long run.
The two metrics describe opposite sides of the same mathematical relationship in many standard casino contexts.
How Wager Volume Affects Expectation

These are mathematical expectations, not guaranteed losses.
How Expected Loss Is Calculated: A Realistic Example
Imagine a player wagers ₹500 per round on a hypothetical game with a 4% house edge. They play 200 rounds.
- Bet: ₹500
- Number of Bets: 200
- House Edge: 4%
- Total Wager: ₹500 × 200 = ₹100,000
- Expected Mathematical Loss: ₹100,000 × 4% = ₹4,000
- Theoretical Expected Return: ₹96,000
This does NOT mean the player will finish with exactly ₹96,000. Actual results depend on the outcomes of the individual rounds and short-term variance.
House Edge vs Variance
It is crucial not to confuse house edge with variance or volatility. They describe completely different properties of a casino game.
- House Edge Describes the mathematical advantage over the long run. It dictates the total payout ratio.
- Variance / Volatility Describes how actual outcomes fluctuate around expected results. A game can have a low house edge but extremely high volatility (frequent losing spins with rare, massive wins).

Why Casino Games Have Different House Edges
House edge isn't an arbitrary number assigned by a casino. It is a mathematical derivation depending on: probability, payout structure, game rules, number of outcomes, player decisions, and bonus mechanics. For instance, European Roulette uses a 37-pocket wheel (one zero), while American Roulette uses a 38-pocket wheel (double zero), changing the mathematical structure completely.
| Game | Typical/Example Edge | Important Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| European Roulette | 2.70% | Standard single-zero wheel rules. |
| American Roulette | 5.26% | Standard double-zero wheel rules. |
| Baccarat (Banker) | 1.06% | Assumes standard 5% commission on Banker wins. |
| Blackjack | Varies (~0.5% - 2%+) | Depends heavily on table rules (e.g., 3:2 vs 6:5 payout, dealer hits soft 17) and perfect player strategy. Check Calculator |
| Slots | Varies (Often 2% - 10%) | Depends strictly on the specific game's RTP configuration by the provider. |
Note: Use exact values only when they are mathematically correct under clearly defined assumptions.

How Adzvelo Calculates House Edge
Transparent methodology, assumptions and reference standards for this tool.
Calculation method
- House edge represents the theoretical long-run advantage of the house under the stated game rules and wager assumptions.
- RTP is shown as 100% minus house edge when both figures describe the same theoretical game or wager.
- Expected mathematical loss is calculated as total amount wagered × house edge.
- Expected theoretical return is total amount wagered × RTP; it is not a prediction of an individual session result.
Assumptions & limitations
- Game-specific figures depend on the exact rules, payouts, bet type and strategy used.
- Blackjack house edge can change materially with decks, blackjack payout, soft-17 rule, surrender, doubling, splitting and player strategy.
- Roulette figures assume the wheel type stated by the tool, such as single-zero or double-zero roulette.
- Slot RTP and house edge are configuration-specific; no generic percentage should be treated as universal.
Reference sources
Adzvelo cross-checks game-rule and mathematical assumptions against published regulatory material and established casino-mathematics references. These sources provide context and rule definitions; Adzvelo does not represent itself as an independent laboratory or game-testing body.
Sources are used for rule and methodology verification. Where a value depends on a specific rule set, the assumption should be stated rather than presented as a universal house-edge figure.
